Hi Mike;

The Hale Sight-O-Tuner SOT is certainly allowed for taking the PTG tuning
exam, but you will have to aurally re-take the 2 octave section from C2
through B3, with nothing but your ears and a tuning fork (oh, we do allow
tuning hammers ;-)

As for the SOT being out-dated, it certainly is, but it is still a useful
tuning device, and very accurate if it has the 1/10 cent knobpots.
Actually, I sometimes think Sanderson Accu-Tuner (SAT) users might be
better educated by off starting with a SOT instead of a SAT. The SOT
requires more involvement in the nuts and bolts of electronic tuning than
the SAT.

BTW you wouldn't be referring to the rarely seen *digital* SOT that Hale
made before going belly-up? That would be allowed too, but I've never
seen one up close. They must be a collectors item by now! <g>

If you think you can pass the test all aurally, my advice is to leave the
machine at home. It's a shorter test that way, and easier on both
examinee and examiners. Besides, that way you will have a shot at
passing at 90% and becoming a CTE (Certified Tuning Examiner). CTE's
must pass all sections at 90% (aurally only). 80% is required for RPT.

The other advice I have is to have CTE give you a pre-test. I give them
for free, saves everyone time, and about doubles the pass rate for
examinees! (Can save you $60 too!)
