Hi Matt, I too am a non-professional who subscribes to pianotech, and
quite coincidentally my first piano repair was done on an old family
heirloom K & B.

A few suggestions:

1. Get the Reblitz book. Study it. Study it again before working on your
   old piano.

2. Do K & B work carefully: No replacement parts are available. Also, now
that I have done work on other pianos, I see that while my 100 yr old
K & B looks beautiful and sounds nice now (and all the notes play
properly), the action is weirdly built and not well made. I had to
carefully reglue broken action parts, repin jacks, rebuild wippens, etc.

3. The jack repair advice you are getting here is -- of course -- the correct
advice. WHoever told you to file is taking shortcuts.

Enjoy working on this old piano: I do, it is quite a pleasure, but do so
carefully.

Mark
