Just to clarify several points about the operation of the Dampp-Chaser
system:

The humidistat operates the humidifier so that it comes on at 40% RH and
stays on until
the environment it detects is 48% RH. At this point it turns off and the
dehumidifiers
come on. They stay on until the humidity drops to 40% RH and the process
repeats itself.
If the ambient humidity level is 90%, I'll guarantee that the dehumidifiers
will be on for a
reasonably long period of time. It is difficult to get 90% down to 40%
unless you are
dealing with a small volume of air that does not have moisture being
reintroduced.

You are quite right about being concerned with the inside RH "where it really
matters". All
to frequently one tries to equate inside humidity with what's happening
outside. Generally
this is misleading. The best thing to do is measure the inside humidity
level.

Webb Phillips at 800-622-7426 makes a rack for the humidity control system
that is self
supported and does not rely on the piano. He has used this system for years
where it was
not practical to make the installation in the piano itself. If you are
interested in humidifying
the B that is giving you trouble, I'd suggest getting in touch with Webb (or
Ruth Brown).
