  My remarks about knobilling pins, wave envelopes and framuses, were my
frail and feeble attempts at humor. This in face of a rather inexplicable
phenomenon.
  The question at the end was serious though. Let me ask it another way.  Is
the change in tone as evident  on a single strike of the hammer (from the
rest position) as well as on swiftly repeated strikes (hammer in check
position rather than at rest) ?
