<< Being new, I admit to ignorance as to what has recently transpired in the pianotech list. I fully expected the grist for the mill to be helping one another with technical problems. However, I was astounded to see the space taken up with "war stories" over <<double reeds>>, <<<triple reads>>> (pun intended) and <<<<quad strings.................[snip].....How about trying that with a double-reed when you are arguing about pitch? >>>>. Bill Maxim, RPT >> Bill, I understand your concern (dismay?) . However, many serious technical questions DO get answered here, believe it or not, but the List, like other lists, is a self-regulating anarchy. I, for one, enjoy that, because an occasional diversion reminds me that the piano business (a pretty small community) is made up of people, rather than pure data, and once in a while I enjoy seeing a "face" put on people with whom I might share more than one common interest. Also, what is a "war story" to one might be "perspective" or "answer by example" to another, and we all place different importance on different issues. For instance, the number of stories about 440 vs. 442 suggests to me that a lot of us have wrestled with the same issue, so it's not small potatoes. (Anything which triples the price of a tuning deserves discussion). Generally this is a pretty good-natured place, and the nice thing about list mail is that anyone for whom a particular thread drifts too far afield can delete further articles with the same title.
