I have used a 5" tip for tuning the top section of grands for 20 years. It
Does take some getting used to but once you do it really works well.
Especially as you are learning to use it, you have to be extra conscious of
TURNING rather than BENDing the pin.

I'm sure most of what we do is what we have trained ourselves to do. Dale
can tune the top left handed because he practiced it. I've always thought I
should learn to tune lefthanded, but I haven't yet. I've had the long tip
since I started tuning and while it felt awkward then, all tuning felt
awkward. That lever is really great for lowering the tension on grands to
restring also. You can take full turns without hitting part of the piano.

It's all in what we learn to do and get used to.
