wrong?

You WERE right; the older pianos DID have iron wrap.  It's only
the newer spinet and consoles which had the aluminum wrap. Everett and
Story & Clark, and Lowry had aluminum strings in the Tenor section.
Wurlitzer and others used a copper flashed iron wrap in the two string
area of the Bass for quite awhile, later using a copper clad iron wrap
which looked just like copper except at the ends of the wrap where you
could see it was really iron.  These were on the economy models well up
into the 70's.
