Peter: My first thought was "Don't lower the tension on the rest of the
strings. Maybe if you are lucky the plate will break and you'll be done
with it." Hope I'm not treading on any toes, but the Gaveaus I've seen
were just pretty pieces of furniture. Whether or not you lower the
tension throughout the piano, the other strings will go wildly out of tune,
so you might as well play it safe and lower the tension throughout the
piano a bit, say a whole step. When you remove the bass strings, the
treble will go sharp, so after installing the new strings you'll be tuning
tuning tuning anyway. Have fun.
