It's something I learned while studying piano as an adult: play the note and then relax. I believe it's from the Taubman method. It doesn't take nearly as much effort to hold a key down as it does to give it a firm blow. Next time you are tuning a piano, notice how much effort you are giving to holding down the key after the note is struck. My thinking is that if you are exerting yourself unnecessarily, this will result in early fatigue and eventually pain. It's as if your body is telling you there's a better, more effective way.
