Sohmer grand

I recently encountered a 5Õ7Ó Sohmer grand piano, serial number 23872#9B,
that had a peculiar middle pedal function that has left me confounded. Can
anyone explain what this pedal's function is? Also, has anyone had a
successful experience modernizing the action in one of these pianos? I'd
be interested in more information on locating *new* replacement parts.
