It's been awhile since I saw John Serkin's video, (if this is the same one
that I did see), but I remember being surprised as he happily illustrated
something or other with the action while the hammers persistently failed to
get into check at all. Perhaps he needed to do whatever he could to help
checking. 

Perhaps this is a figment of the imperfect memory Ron's been reading about.
It's been years.
