A "lert"

I'm not sure what a "lert" is, but I believe it has something to do with
aviation. Back in the old days when I worked as a flight service specialist
with our government, we used to broadcast weather reports to pilots. We
would end each broadcast with the phrase "keep a lert and watch for other
aircraft".
