Thanks for all the info about S & S model designations.  Stephen Dove
tells me that, according to Steinway's records, this serial no. belongs
to a 5'7" model "M" built in 1925.  (Could the Pierce be wrong?  Gasp!)
Perhaps I mismeasured.  Based on your explanation on how to measure the
beast, I'll go do it again.
