Phil:
We use/promote these covers (called "String Covers") here in San Diego
for just the reason that you state, that the salt air will corrode the
strings. And keep the plate, soundboard, etc. clean. And stabilize the
tuning. They WORK. I have seen 6 year old pianos look like they were
just delivered from the showroom. You just can't keep them as clean
without a lot of work with the vacuum, etc. They should be made of 100%
wool, or they will trap moisture under the strings, causing more rust
than they are supposed to prevent. I have sold many, as have some of
the best tuners here in S.D. And you can also sell them and make some
money for your trouble. Contact Edwards Pianos (See the Journal
classifieds) and they will send you a miniature cover to show, along
with swatches of different colors. Also, they will print brochures with
YOUR name on them so you can easily sell them. It's a Great Deal! By
the way, La Roy Edwards is head of Yamaha service dept. I think he may
know a thing or two about pianos and their maintenance.
You may have found a very good thing - and not have been aware of it.
