A prospective client has a good quality grand otherwise worth rebuilding except for a cracked plate. The two plate struts closest to the treble side are cracked just before the curve that rejoins them with the back of the plate over the treble bridge. We have welders in our area who are experienced with work on cast metal but I'm wondering what the success rate is and what in particular a welder should take note of if not familiar with working on piano plates. I know there are over 40 types of welding processes, which is best for this situation? Is there a way to add a brace without having it visible from above? I am extremely dubious about taking on the rest of the work on this piano but would like to get back to the owner before she leaves for vacation tomorrow (Wednesday). Please e-mail me directly. Thank you.
