FREE FALLING FALLBOARD

I can't settle this issue, but I can throw more fodder on the fire. Having
smashed enough fingers on old Kimball fallboards, I started taking off all
fallboards when I tune, if able to do so quickly. The first slow-fall
fallboard I came across was on a Boston grand, which is made by Kawai for
Steinway. I was surprised, because when I set the fallboard back in, and
tried to lower it to make sure I had it in correctly, I really had to press
hard to get it to close. So, I took it back out, installed it again, same
thing. So when I went back to my dealer, I checked out the other Bostons,
and sure enough, they all did it. So I was impressed. I have been tuning
Yamahas for over a decade, and have never noticed a slow fallboard. At
least not in the same sense as the Boston.
