I have run into the same thing in a Behr Brothers piano. There was something on the plate or somewhere, bragging about the patented bass bridge tension compensating design, or some such wording. I guess the idea was that if you pinned every other one the opposite way, you wouldn't create a twist torque (I don't know how to put it. You wouldn't be twisting the whole bridge to one side).
