signing on

Often the list gets messages from people inquiring about signing on to the
pianotech list. Then helpful subscribers very nicely send instructions to the
list about how to sign on. Problem is, if those instructions are sent to the
list, the poor person who wants to sign on doesn't get them - on account of
not having subscribed yet. The helpful message should be sent privately to
that person's email address. A nice side effect is less bandwidth clutter on
the list.
