Piano Tuning and Aviaiton

Can ETDs be considered basic equipment? Not only basic, but in my opinion
essential. Lets face it, in a perfect world, our work environment would
abound with silence and solitude. Setting temperaments and octaves aurally
would never present a problem. But the truth is that we constantly have to
deal with concert sound checks that never end, classrooms that seem to let
out every ten minutes, and parents that refuse to ride herd on noisy kids.
Some techs have the luxury of packing up and heading out the door, but to me,
the best solution is to turn on the ETD and do the best job of tuning
possible under impossible conditions. And although the tuning I produce under
these conditions is not one that I would like to have carved in granite to
represent my legacy as a tuner, it is one that 99.9% of my customers are
