Dan, If memory serves, most of the Mehlin grands used Wessell, Nickle & Gross actions. 2-3/4 doesn't sound all that out of line for some of those, but I think I'd tend to go with taking samples of what is there to see what is working "properly". These actions have a slightly more "clunky" feel to them than a pre-whenever S&S, more like the Masons with the shorter whips, but do give good control and repetition once well set up. Most of the Mehlins I have seen have incorporated some very interesting design concepts, had good scales and were very well built. Should be fun. Good luck!
