Mike: If you want to wash out stains which were water-borne (Coke, beer, etc.), use water to dissolve them. Using solvents on these will not work. I would at least remove the strings from the hitch pins before trying to douse them because the water (or whatever you use) will travel down the core anyway. Then you can dry them with a hair dryer.
