Susan, I know that Bill Spurlock describes the shank thinning trimmer in his handout on Grand Hammer installation. The PTG Journal article is November 1990 Page 23. There is a good diagram that accompanies the article. He uses a laminate trimmer and a cradle that the hammer shank sits in on the router table. He only trims off the sides of the hammer shank. Three advantages with doing it this way. One is that wood can be removed evenly from both sides, two, you have exact contol over the termination of the cuts and three, once you have the jig made, the cutting is easy. >There was a good Journal article by Bill Spurlock awhile back about thinning >shanks for the treble using a jig and router.
