DUH...I didn't even know that the brakes had two guide holes!  
I followed your instructions and I'll be damned if it 
doesn't work.  Not only does it do a good job of straightening 
but the wire is held with enough friction that I don't have to 
worry about it unspooling after my cut, although I'll still but 
a little bend at the end of the wire.
