add enough weight to the system to be noticeable. 

This may very well be true, but how many verticals have you seen that
did not need some weight added?  I have used the clip ons for years with
no complaint.  It is possible to add weight by using plastic tubing with
an ID of 7/32 and a thick wall, cut to length to fit the backstop shank
when split.  I do not think a brass clip weighs enough to effect the
weight but a gram or two.
