James, There are plenty of places that will let you try it before buying. You should at least expect that. As for handwriting.....it is an abbreviated alphabet, but very logical and easy to learn. It helps to be consistent. The new PalmPilot III has a good feel to the screen and I think the writing is detected easier. At any rate, it takes no time at all to get used to it. If you get stuck, there is always a little keyboard on which you can point to the letters and it will print.
