Hi All, I have long been under the impression that aluminum in winding strings has only been going on since the late 30's. Iron being the culprit before that but does anyone know when aluminum was first used in winding? I was always told that iron windings gave the bass a more robust sound but did not retain that tone. Copper gave an acceptable sound but tonally was not as appealing. Maybe all that was hogwash. I do remember a 1904 concert D that had iron winding in the 60's and it was awe-full.
