Bill, Do you use Mapes for your rescaled strings, or someone else? Inquiring minds want to know. doug richards San Jose, CA -----Original Message----- From: SprBil@AOL.COM [mailto:SprBil@AOL.COM] Sent: Tuesday, August 03, 1999 5:55 PM To: pianotech@ptg.org Subject: Bass String Scale Hi John, Seems like your analysis is correct given what you've read. IMHO, rescaling is a lot more trial and error, or an art form if you will. While there are certain guidelines that make sense, there is still a lot of room to be creative. Practically speaking however, you need someone make the bass strings for you. I'm pretty sure Mapes would not make the low bass string you are suggesting as it would be way out of their normal range. I use the scaling program by Tremaine Parsons. In the manual he offers some basic guidelines that will keep you out of the worst trouble. I believe the manual is a free download from his website. I don't have the URL handy, but you can get there thru the Piano page (www.ptg.org). Good luck, and I would certainly encourage your experimentation!
