One of my clients had an old upright and I explained the need for a pitch raise in a conventional technical manner. Since he was an engineer, he understood the technical need. Then I asked him how HE would explain this to someone hearing it for the first time. He said he would NOT use the term "pitch raise" at all. He thought it is clearer to simply say that "the piano is so flat, it will take more than one tuning to bring it to correct pitch." So, that is the way I explain it now; that I do not charge as much for the "rough tuning" which is needed before the "fine tuning". My clients have never questioned that explanation.
