Richard,
I would be leary about wrestling with this plate to get it out *again*.
Clean and wax the board or refinish it before you restring it.
Remove the finish from the inside of the case and sand also.

The plate can be masked off for refinishing.

If the cracks are going to hold they do not need excess stress.
