Hammer glue such a Grand Smell

Just a note on hide glue in general.

Jim Skaggs, a factory rep of Aeolian Co. , years ago, said they did tests with
hide glue and found it to be an extremely strong glue, but only when newly
made up. The second day of pot life the glue was only 60% as strong, and by
the 3rd or 4th day it was all the way down to 25-30% as strong as new. The
heat of the pot degrades the glue into smaller chain molecules, or whatever.
You add to that the fact that the glue is a protein in water, and is
immediately attacked by bacteria when cool enough. Think about letting a steak
sit on the counter overnight, and then the second day, and then the third. The
bacterial load could get immense. That is why OSHA theoretically made them add
preservative chemicals, which are biologically poisonous.

For most player work, weak glue for pneumatics and sealing is just fine. But
for permanent wood to wood casework and veneering, Aeolian made if fresh
daily.

All those who want to taste their old glue now, raise your tongues.
