work hardening (was string break)

Dear List,

Well I was wrong about work hardening of piano wire when a loop is made
for a splice.

My metallurgist friend said so, but he also said that it is not as
simple as just work hardening, that there are other elements of
crystallization, laminating effects, creep, etc., etc. So much that he
was hesitant to say just case hardening.

Well, live and learn. And unlearn old misinformation.
