Ha! I've done this! I discovered it quite spontaneously when "warming"
fronts for removal with an iron that was considerably hotter than I
realized. Very dramatic, accompanied by a huge dense smoke cloud and lots of
yelling and flailing about. Fortunately, I was alone in the shop at the time
and no one that mattered was injured. These days, I saw them off. It doesn't
stink that much less, but there's not as much smoke or adrenalin produced.

Tops with fronts are definitely the way to go for replacement. I use PVC-E,
with a couple of pieces of masking tape to hold everything down until the
glue dries.
