There are many professions besides tuning which may not produce a living
income, especially in a small town.  I am a fortepiano maker, and also do some
moderm piano tuning and occasional rebuilds - and still come out a bit short. 
But it's way better that a job at Wal Mart; they key is a working spouse. 
Which is also why many of us are in small towns.
