In the first place, it should be "glue-size", no "gule-size" which is a
a typo. My technical knowledge in this area is fairly limited, but it's
basically this: when you add moisture to wood, it swells up. When wet,
the glue causes the wood to swell up and tighten around the pin.
However, unlike water, the glue doesn't evaporate, it hardens, so the
wood stays in this "swollen" position.
