Andy-

You already have more information than is given in Pierce Atlas.  I grew up in
Maine and tuned several Hughes & Son pianos, also a few Wade Pianos, in the
1950's.  Only one of them was anywhere near in good condition.  My conclusion
was that their quality was not up to the average of most other makes.  Most
suffered deterioration of pin blocks, wood in the action, etc.

In the early 1960's I was in Dover-Foxcroft and called on a Miss Hughes, the
daughter of the founder.  She said her father stopped manufacturing during the
first world war, when he was unable to get the quality of materials he wanted.
The Wade was their second line of pianos.  "Wade" was his wife's maiden name.

In the 30 years I have been in South Carolina, I have only run into one Hughes
& Son piano.
