Tightening coils on sloppy restringing

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure where I got the idea from. (I originally
thought I heard it from the guy that got me into this, but I asked him, and
he didn't remember us even talking about it.) The thinking behind what I've
been doing is to let the becket (the end of the wire that is) stick out of
the hole aprox. 1/2 the diameter of the wire, not to exceed the diameter of
the wire. What that leaves me with is a wire end that acts as a kind of
stop for the coil and when it's lifted it keeps the coil from coming up too
far. If the wire end comes out past the coil, it really rubs me the wrong
way. I've seen a few that really let 'em hang out, even as much as 1/8".
And the Baldwin idea of bending over the end, ... well, that's another
story... I really haven't given much thought to doing it the way you
describe, but you have me thinking about it.

I'm curious as to what the measuring guage is. Is the jpg an image you can
send as an e-mail attachment? I'm not sure, is it a tool for measuring
string length and becket length as well? Would love to see it! :-)

Thanks for the discussion. I appreciate people who make me think about
stuff I hadn't really thought about before.
