The hand-crafted part was a brass rail plate, with threaded hole. Someone had cut and shaped a penny, drilled and threaded a hole to replace one of those brass plates that break so often. This is one of the most ingenious repairs I have seen in a piano. I recently enjoyed working with a customer who replaced a damper rod's L shaped hanger , on a spinet. He is a metal worker, created and silver soldered the new L shaped piece and all I did was R&R the action a couple times.
