Third-string catchers

List,

I tuned a Baldwin Hamilton yesterday with the worst catchers I've ever
seen. Everything looks as it should but the buckskin (imitation?) is
like glass and the backcatches won't hold them. The obvious remedy is
to replace the buckskin, but the cost is an obstacle. What about just
roughing the surfaces with a checkering file or coarse sandpaper?

Opinions?
