There have been recent advancements in welding rod technology. Although I 
have not tried the new high nickel (I think) rods, I understand they are used 
in arc welders just like regular rods, but are formulated for cast iron and 
work very well.  No preheat necessary, and none of that "heat the whole plate 
up to dull red and braze method"
