Hi Andrew,

Something you could try is locating a supplier of kiln dried hardwood.
(Sometimes they will have some softwoods too.) There are several places
near me that sell a pretty large variety of such wood in the rough. I
prefer buying my lumber from such places since they are usually more easily
able to supply me with whatever dimensions (and wood characteristics) _I_
want. At the 'Home Depot' type places, they have what they have, and that's
it. I do have some woodworking equipment so rough cut lumber is not a
problem. Also, when you buy a 2 X 4, it's really 2" by 4" or more (usually
referred to as 8/4 lumber rather than 2 X ).

I would guess there are many different woods you could use. Poplar, maple,
oak, cherry, ash, etc. Sometimes these suppliers will have warped / twisted
/ bowed stock at a significant discount. It's more work to use this stuff,
but sometimes the prices are too good to pass up.

Good luck in your search. I'm sure there's somebody in your neighborhood
that can supply you with what you need. It's just a matter of finding them.
