Mark Potter writes: (and Mr Willem Blees also,) << it sounds like a perfect description of what a piano can sound like with a ceiling fan running in the room near the piano. The very first time I ran into this I was puzzled for quite some time!>> I THINK YOU NAILED IT! There WAS a big ceiling fan with large, smooth, perfectly flat blades behind and to the left of the pianist position, it WAS on (it was darned hot) AND the fan was ultraquiet. When it was turned on I noted it produced no sound, just air movement like a fan should. It was so quiet that I completely forgot it was there, not possible with most fans. Now that you mentioned it, I do vaguely remember that fans can cause interference patterns in the sound, etc., but I certainly did not think of it at the time. This effect was a first for me! I am printing out your post and taping it into my service book, so that I positively see and remember it for a long time. ( Running ceiling fans are very common in Phoenix in the summer. ) Thank you very much, Bill Simon Phoenix
