I believe you have fallen into a trap of the american mind: "If it ain't
titanium, it ain't the best." Sometimes wood is just more efficient,
particularly for weight/strength ratios.

I don't know about later models, but I remember reading news articles about
how astounded the US astronauts were to find wooden structural members in
Soyuz spacecraft during the Apollo - Soyuz hookups.
