I just replaced the batteries in mine.  I didn't have to keep the
charger plugged in, and I left it without the batteries connected for
many days, and no problem.  No, you don't need to replace any
capacitor.  This is the second replacement set of nicads I've installed.
Piece of cake, just do it.
