Those in southern Florida who want another manual looksee often voice the
assumption that if a voter selected the Democratic party candidate in some
other contests then they certainly intended to vote for Gore as well. Would
you liberals want anyone to make such an assumption about your choices?
There are simply too many variables in the mix to permit anything like a
reliable hand count. It is certainly unfortunate. But, that's the simple
fact of the matter. Nationwide, somewhere between 1.25 and 2 million ballots
did not register a vote for President. "Justice for all" demands a manual
recount of each and every one of them. On a personal note, the Gore camp's
contempt for American military personnel removes him from any serious
contention of being the real Commander-In-Chief. You don't tell people that
they don't matter and then order them off to die and kill. The American
military is extraordinarly respectful and compliant with the needs of the
nation and the Constitution. But, they are not to be treated in such a
cavalier manner. Human nature is the same everywhere. And the very real
possibility of a military rebellion must not be totally ignored. It would
take the form of mass resistance to assignment overseas, mass resignations,
sharp reduction in recruiting. I don't expect ever to see an open coup. But,
as in 1861, extreme situations often results in extreme measures.

Perhaps, the appointment by Congress of an interim President, say for a
period of six months, and the implementation of another complete election,
eschewing any use of punch-card ballots, would satisfy both sides. It's
better than the risk of revolution or the long-term damage caused by having
a divided congress and a weak President.

Or, the United States could just seceed from Florida........
