In the book, Steinway and Sons, there is a series of pictures that show quite clearly the rim building process..sans "vise"..sans "press" but with lots of "clamps", "cauls" and men. Hey if I turn out to be wr.... er, mista......not correct, it will still be a beatiful day here. :-) David also said: <<"I think the clamps are used to get the rim close to piano shape before fitting the press?">> Well OK but is it "a press" or "a vise" ? :-) If it is truly either than couldn't the "clamps" be done away with? ----------------------- Just for consistency I offer the following definitions: Jig- a fixture to allow subsequent operations to be performed as to desired parameters of shape or form thereby allowing the replication of forms/shapes. Vise-1. A clamping device of metal or wood, usually consisting of two jaws closed or opened by a screw or lever, used in carpentry or metalworking to hold a piece in position. Press-1. Any of various machines or devices that apply pressure and create new forms or structural alignment. Clamp-1. Any of various devices used to join, grip, support, or compress mechanical or structural parts.
