A drill press vise holds the key and a 3/4" plunge router bit in the drill press planes the surface. I also have a clear plastic guard which shields the cutter. Open blades make me nervous. On the vise is an indexing stop for the front of the key and then a fence on the table stops the forward motion of the vise to insure identical routed lengths.
