Long, long ago, in a time when I knew more, I restrung an old H. F. Miller upright. There were no half sizes and vast sections of one size. I figured I could 'rescale on the fly' and introduced a generic scale including half sizes. The sound was a dissapointment, worse than before. So I removed the 'new' stuff and followed the original scale. It sounded as it should. Go figure. I was relieved.
