Some ideas:
A weaker spring would produce less resistance, but at the same time, might
cause the damper system to not return to its home position as effectively.

Beefing up the bottom board could be done some with 'L' shaped mending plates.

Changing the actual location of the fulcrum would be the most effective
solution.
