Owen I can't remember the piano I saw with an open face pin block with burled veneer. I had noticed that each tuning pin hole had a slight relief to it, like someone had tapered the veneer with a countersink. Now that I've read your post, I wonder if this "countersinking" wasn't done to protect the delicate face veneer while driving pins.
