They will not get better. Based on what I have seen of rails that I have replaced the wood will split, someone will put in biger screws, the wood and brass will split more, biger screws, etc, etc. I have seen rails that were split so bad that parts of the brass has fallen off and someone had put in bolts in place of screws.
